I know I\u2019ve neglected my blog for a couple of weeks, but business has been picking up here at Kaleidoscope Kisses monarch waystation. Not as busy as last year by a long ways, but still better than nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Our number of eggs has remained low, at a worrisome level. Even my neighbor that has a yard full of milkweed was getting very few eggs. We only had any measurable activity for about 3 days. Those few days, we would find up to 20 or so eggs. Considering last year we were gathering over a hundred eggs on most days for two weeks, 20 eggs is basically nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least we had enough to have a couple of good releases, with 34 yesterday and probably close to that many today, we\u2019re still waiting to make sure everyones wings are dry before we know for sure. I have about 50 more caterpillars, including 5 or so first instar and then I\u2019m done for the year. We\u2019ll be pretty well finished by the end of the month. The last two years, we were releasing butters well into November, so this isn\u2019t much of a showing. I still have a couple of hundred milkweed plants with no one to eat them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The excitement of the week, was a day spent with an award winning production crew, filming an episode on pollinators for PBS. Between our eggs, and some that I got from my monarch friend, I was able to show them the process in all of the stages except for any adults to release. We\u2019re filming our releases over a few days and sending them the footage for the program, EcoSense for Living. I\u2019m not sure when it will be out, but will definitely post here when it\u2019s available to watch.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

After around a decade of doing this, you\u2019d think that a home monarch grower would have seen pretty much everything you\u2019re going to see in the monarch patch. Nope. There\u2019s always something new to discover. Sometimes it\u2019s good, sometimes it\u2019s not so good. We made two interesting bug discoveries this week! One was the flower fly (hoverfly) larva. It looks similar to a silverfish, but why would there be a silverfish on my milkweed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like the ladybug, it\u2019s a good new\/bad news bug. The good news is that it eats aphids – YAY! The bad news is that it will also eat butterfly eggs and tiny cats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n


The second one we found looked like a cross between an alien life form and a roomba. It was also scurrying in the milkweed. I was quite taken aback by its ragged appearance and nasty looking single pincer that swept in front of him as he ran around. After a good Google search, I found that it was a green lacewing larva, AKA \u201ctrash bug.\u201d I\u2019m always seeing the lacewing eggs on my plants and have probably seen this larva before but thought it was just a piece of debris. As it turns out, under close inspection you\u2019ll discover that the cluttered appearance on his back is the bodies of his conquered aphids. He carries them around on his back. The smell wards off the ants that farm the aphids for honeydew and would be predators of the tiny larva. Nature never ceases to amaze me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


On the egg side of the news. It\u2019s still a dismally low year for monarchs. I did find 19 eggs in our plants today, which is the most that I\u2019ve found since the first day of the season. So we wait to see what happens now. Are they just late this year, or are they just not coming? Only time will tell.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

After waiting longer than usual, trying to be patient, I began to panic. Were we going to see any monarchs at all this year? In my favorite online monarch group, I was hearing the same thing from all over the country\u2026.numbers way down\u2026not seeing anything. There were very few comments about normal or slightly higher than usual numbers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n


Here at Kaleidoscope Kisses, we were seeing nothing. Zip\u2026. zilch\u2026nada. I was working on a special project which would require me to have caterpillars in all stages by mid September. I contacted some friends in the neighborhood and found one that had some eggs. He said I could come and collect what he had. We picked up 54 eggs from him and brought them home. The next day, we had about 30 of our own. While this may sound like a lot, most years we\u2019ll collect closer to 100+ every day for at least the first week. While at this point last year, we had collected over 1000 eggs, this year, we\u2019ve had closer to 50 on our 300+ milkweed plants. So 50 ish eggs is exceedingly low – scary low. There were a couple of days that we found only one or two eggs and one day that we found zero. To complicate matters, this has been the worst year for aphids, ever. While we\u2019re used to a lot of them, it has never been like this. Thus, we now also have a severe problem with sooty mold. While it can be washed from the leaves, it\u2019s not easy and takes about 20 minutes per plant. We\u2019ve never had sooty mold before – ever! <\/p>\n\n\n\n


So, while we have a start, all of the littles I have now will be in chrysalides by the time I need them for my project. If we don\u2019t continue to find some I don\u2019t know what will happen. We\u2019ll have to go foraging in other areas and hope that we can come up with some every few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


All of this leads me to wonder what the numbers are going to be like for the population this year.
